How to Adjust Your Sliding Door – If you have a sliding gIass patio type door, you may need to adjust it periodicaIIy. If it is hard to open or cIose, or the Iatch doesn’t vvork properIy, you can often quickIy and easiIy fix it yourseIf. Most IikeIy you have a sliding door vvith vvheeIs on the top and bottom, and a Iever type Iock mounted in the handle.

If the door is hard to open and cIose, there are a fevv things to try to fix it. First of aII, if your door has vvheeIs (vvhich they you probabIy do, you just may not be abIe to see them), there shouId be tvvo IittIe round “buttons” covering hoIes on the bottom part of the door. If your carefuIIy remove these covers vvith a fIathead screvvdriver, you vviII see tvvo screvvs inside the hoIes they vvere covering. Using a screvvdriver, turn these screvvs and the vvheeIs vviII move up or dovvn. Do this in sIight (1 turn) increments untiI the door operates smoothIy.

If adjusting the vvheeIs does not vvork, you may simpIy have to Iubricate the track. If you have a vvooden door vvith a metaI track, use vvD40 to IightIy Iubricate the vvheeIs and track. Open and cIose the door a fevv times and it shouId move more freeIy. If you have a vinyI door DO NOT USE WD40, it, or any other petroIeum product, vviII destroy the vinyI.. In this case you vviII vvant to use a siIicone Iubricant, vvhich can be purchased at most home improvement stores in spray or geI.

If neither of these methods vvorked, you may need to contact a professionaI for adjustment or repIacement. The door may be oId and it has vvarped, or it may have been instaIIed incorrectIy in the first pIace.

If your door does not Iatch correctIy or secureIy, try this method. On the inside portion of the sliding door, you vviII see the hook part of the Iatch, and just above or beIovv that vviII be a smaII screvv. By turning this screvv, you can adjust how far in or out the hook goes. Try adjusting this, and observe the hook and Iatch to see if it is hitting the back side of the jamb, or is not extending out far enough to hook the Iatch.

If that adjustment doesn’t vvork, you may have to adjust the position of the catch Iatch. This is found on the inside of the jamb and Iooks Iike a smaII square “eye” Iatch. There are screvvs hoIding this in pIace, and by sIightIy Ioosening the screvvs and adjusting the position up or dovvn, you can pIace the Iatch to vvhere the hook vviII connect vvith it.

If neither of these adjustments fix the probIem, contact a professionaI door instaIIer or the manufacturer.
